Every Enemy Thomas Shelby Faced in Peaky Blinders | All the Villains Who Tried to Take Down Thomas Shelby

Within the realm of “Peaky Blinders,” Thomas Shelby is a powerful character who possesses both heroic and anti-hero qualities. By the end of series, he becomes one of the most prominent and famous gypsies in the country. Even feared by his own people, he’s an excellent strategist, politician, and of course a businessman. Though, one can be right all the time with everything, and that’s why our stubborn hero also made a lot of mistakes throughout the season, which was a direct advantage for his enemies.

But the interesting part is, what really makes Tommy Shelby so charming? That’s his ability to turn every situtaion in his own favor. Either he’s under extreme pressure, or facing personal demons, he’s got a strong emotional intelligence which is why he’s always ahead of his enemies.

As of a personal opinion, all the enemies Thomas faced in Peaky Blinders, shaped his fate. They were the reason what he becomes by the end of series.

This article dives further into the enemies that Thomas Shelby faces in each season, examining how they influence the story and the evolution of his character.

Billy Kimber

  • Role: Birminghamโ€™s top crime lord controlling racecourses
  • Conflict: Tommy begans expansion into race betting, without permission and Kimber’s approval
  • Key Episodes: S1 Episodes 4โ€“6

The first season revolves around the tension between Thomas and Billy Kimber (Charlie Creed-Miles). Tommy slowly undermines the control of Kimber by using psychological manipulation and physical force. He already knew that Kimber will never work with him as he’s a small town gypsy, and to take him down that will require some extra power and efforts. That’s why he fixed a race without letting him know, so he could grab Kimber’s attention, which was a great move to undermine him.

Billy underestimated him at every point, thinking that “Peaky Blinders what?”, they are just small town gang members. One thing is clear in the very first meeting at the Garrison that Kimber’s accountant was more intelligent than him. Maybe he was the reason he made it that far without any common sense.

The two men’s rivalry builds throughout the season, ending in an outstanding climax. Tommy defeats Kimber in the 6th episode of first season, murdering him and seizing control of his operations. That victory becomes a vital moment for Thomas Shelby, marking the beginning of his rise to power.

Although, that was a quick combat, but becomes full of tention when Ada (Sophie Rundle) jumps in with her baby.

Major Inspector Chester Campbell

  • Role: Government agent sent by Winston Churchill
  • Threat: Wants to take over every criminal in the city starting with Peaky Blinders
  • Key Episodes: Throughout Seasons 1โ€“2

Thomas and Campbell have a deeply interesting, confusing, complex, and intimate rivalry, whatever you call it from your own perspective. Tommy sees him as a dangerous enemy whereas Campbell sees Shelby as a dangerous criminal who needs to be stopped at all costs. In addition to issues of control and power, their conflict is motivated by personal grievances and ideologies.

He’s one of the most influential and powerful enemies who appeared in two seasons and gave the most tough and competitive time to Peaky Blinders.

Thomas took one thing from Campbell (Sam Neil), that was love. Surely, that made us wonder even in that age what is driving him to that path, but obviously he’s a man and they can easily lose their heart to a beautiful woman. Still, one woman became the very reason for such violence and anger. Major Chester litteraly shook the whole empire of Thomas Shelby only to seek revenge.

He smartly planned the assassination of Shelby at the end of second season, but failed to do so, as he just like others underestimated Thomas at every point. As mentioned earlier, Tommy Shelby knows how to take advantage of every sitaution and how to turn every possible event in his own favor.

Darby Sabini

  • Role: London crime syndicate leader
  • Conflict: Racecourse control and alliance with Kimber
  • Key Episodes: S2 Episodes 1โ€“6

In the second season, Darby Sabini (Noah Taylor), the head of an Italian gang that owns the London racetracks, comes in a direct clash with Tommy as both men try to expand their business into London. Sabini is a brutal and ruthless gangster, known for his violent methods and strong influence on the underworld gangs.

Tommy was almost finished at one point because of interferring with Sabini’s business. Luckily he was saved by the very man who also wanted to finish him, and that man was Major Chester Campbell. Obviosuly, he saved him for a reason so he could undermine him and use him for his personal agendas.

The battle between Thomas and Sabini was fierce, with both sides suffering heavy losses. Tommy’s ambition drives him to challenge Sabini’s dominance, leading to a series of violent actions and crimes. Despite the odds, his strategic brilliance and alliances with other gangs allow him to gain the upper hand. He never finished him, but he took almost everything Sabini had in his power.

Alfie Solomons

Credits: Netflix
  • Role: Jewish gang leader in Camden Town
  • Conflict: They both always end up fighting due to some personal agendas
  • Relationship: Friend. Enemy. Friend again.

Friend or foe, say whatever you want, but their friendship is one of the most interesting relationships in the series. Alfie (Tom Hardy) is a Jewish gang leader from Camden Town, known for his unpredictable nature and sharp intellect, and, of course, funny replies. His connections to the underworld and willingness to play both sides make him a valuable friend and a dangerous enemy.

In the 4th season, the tension between Alfie and Thomas reaches a boiling point. Although they have worked together in the past, they never truly trusted each other. Alfie’s manipulative nature and his tendency to betray those close to him end up in a complex situation where Tommy is almost about to finish him off, but then comes his sharp intellectuality where he reminds Thomas that they are both the same and he’s no saint.

Its funny, even after so many betrayals, Thomas trusted Solomons for his final act the end of series. It was a win-win approach of course, but he seeked his help anyways.

Father John Hughes

Credits: BBC One
  • Role: Elite political powerbroker backed by intelligence services
  • Threat: Manipulates Tommy, badly injured him, kidnaps his son
  • Key Episodes: S3 Episodes 3โ€“6

If there’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing, that’s Father Hughes (Paddy Considine), in the whole series. That man literally gave Thomas the real nightmares. He was backed by the most influential and powerful rulers that are never shown in the series, but one thing is clear, neither Hughes nor the rulers had any good intentions for the common people. What we see in the 4th season is actual politics, which is far above the reach of Peaky Blinders, and that’s why their involvement ended up in the execution of the whole family.

While following Hughes, Thomas almost lost his life but was spared at a cost.

Hughes is one of the most competitive enemies in the series, who shocked Thomas at almost every turn. Tommy Shelby never dislikes anyone, trusting someone is a second thing, but he never disliked his enemies, but, when it came to Father Hughes, he became annoyed every time they met each other, and at one point, he even refused to eat at the same table with Hughes.

Hughes’s death ends one of the darkest chapters in Thomas Shelby’s life.

The Royal Russians

Every Enemy Thomas Shelby Faced in Peaky Blinders | All the Villains Who Tried to Take Down Thomas Shelby | The Royal Russians
  • Role: Exiled aristocrats with secret agendas
  • Threat: Manipulation through charm, intimacy, and deception
  • Key Episodes: S3 Episodes 1โ€“6

In the 3rd season, we see some weird type of enemies that add an extra layer of complexity and confusion in Tommy Shelby’s life. Fled from the Bolshevik Revolution, these Russian nobles are desperate and dangerous, and are willing to do whatever it takes to regain their lost wealth and power. Moreover, they chose Thomas because they had a belief they could use him in whatever way they liked.

Tommy lost a wife, and almost lost his son because of his involvment with Russians. His real mental breakdown began after this business.

These people used arrogant and magical ways to achieve their purpose. Thomas got confused on many occasions because of the things he faced during his involvement in this business. Especially, Tatianna (Gaite Jansen), manipulated him in real scary ways, played creepy games with him, and even tried to take the place of his late wife. That makes one thing clear, season 3 is a real game changer for Shelbys.

Luca Changretta & The New York Mafia

Every Enemy Thomas Shelby Faced in Peaky Blinders | All the Villains Who Tried to Take Down Thomas Shelby | Luca Changretta & The New York Mafia
Credits: Netflix
  • Role: Sicilian-American mob boss seeking revenge
  • Origin: Tommy killed his father, Vicente Changretta
  • Threat Level: Highest personal war in the series
  • Key Episodes: S4 E1 – 6

The conflict between Tommy and Luca (Adrien Brody) is intense and personal, with both men determined to destroy each other. He was the leader of a Sicilian-American gang that followed cold-blooded and systematic tactics like vendetta. The Shelbys lost one of the most important family figures, “John (Joe Cole)”, because of this vendetta.

This was the second time Tommy had to face such a fierce enemy because of “love”. All this vendetta thing started because of private affair betweeen Luca’s cousin Angel and Lizzie Stark (Natasha O’Keeffe).

The end of the 4th season again proves that Tommy can turn even complex terms and conditions to his advantage. He lost a brother, but he took advantage of his funeral to turn down two major members of the Italian mob, then he faked Arthur’s (Paul Aderson) death to take Luca down. He won this vendetta, but he became sicker after this war.

Oswald Mosley

Credits: Netflix
  • Role: Real-life fascist leader rising in British politics
  • Threat: Political power, manipulation, and influence
  • Key Episodes: S5โ€“S6 entire narrative

Oswald Mosley (Sam Clafin) was the only enemy Tommy couldn’t defeat. Every assassination attempt failed. Every plan backfired. One of the most confident and dangerous men of the series, who had almost everything in his hands, and was even capable of destroying the Shelby empire to the ground. But he chose Thomas for a reason and made him do things that were completely against his will.

Obviously, he was using Shelby and his empire for his own reasons, but, at the same time, he wanted a future that Tommy couldn’t control, and he was always three steps ahead of him. Mosley proved to be the most dangerous and unresolved enemy of Thomas, and maybe that was the reason he was alive till the end of the series, otherwise, Tommy Shelby never spared any of his enemies.

Billy Boys โ€“ Jimmy McCavern

Every Enemy Thomas Shelby Faced in Peaky Blinders | All the Villains Who Tried to Take Down Thomas Shelby | Billy Boys โ€“ Jimmy McCavern
Credits: BBC One
  • Role: Glasgow razor gang led by Jimmy McCavern
  • Threat Level: Highly violent, protestant gangs, anti-Peaky expansion force
  • Key Episodes: Season 5 (Introduced in Episode 2)

Another significant threat in Season 5 comes from the Billy Boys, a violent Protestant gang from Glasgow led by Jimmy McCavern (Brain Gleeson). The Billy Boys are known for their brutal tactics and their fierce loyalty to the Protestant cause. Their introduction brings a new level of brutality to the series, as they pose a direct threat to the Shelby family and their business interests.

Its a strange fact that they hated Peaky Blinders for being Catholics but truth was far deep than that.

Jimmy’s gang was aligned with Mosley, further complicating Tommy’s efforts to undermine the rise of fascism in Britain. The Billy Boys were ruthless and relentless, forcing Tommy to adopt even more extreme measures to protect his family and his empire.

This one gang done a lot of damage to Shelby’s associates and organization, and only because of Mosley, Tommy had to end that battle in a truce.

Jack Nelson

Every Enemy Thomas Shelby Faced in Peaky Blinders | All the Villains Who Tried to Take Down Thomas Shelby | Jack Nelson
  • Role: Powerful Boston-Irish mobster with deep political ties in the U.S.
  • Threat Level: Covert and highly influential โ€” dangerous in silence
  • Key Episodes: Season 6 (primarily Episodes 2โ€“6)

Then at last comes the Uncle Jack (James Frecheville), one of the most influential and powerful gangsters of the series. Its true that this smart and cunning mobster got a very little time on Blinders screen, but he had a class and influence of such level that even Mosley and Thomas couldn’t refuse to admire. That man brought a lot of complexity and challenge in Shelby organization, deceived so many people and at last even tried to kill Tommy.

Jack was so powerful that he was one of the closest associates of President of United States of America (that’s what narrated in the series). We never get to see his actual power and influence in American territories, but the troubles he creates in Britain (in 6th season) proves that he was one of the rulers and real decision makers with a lot of political and man power.

We never get to see what really happens to Jack at the end, but Thomas killed all of his actual associates in the end of 6th season, which was a huge damage to Jack Nelson.

Michael Gray

Credits: BBC One
  • Role: Successor figure turned rival
  • Motivation: Greed, ambition, Ginaโ€™s influence
  • Result: Declares war on Tommy

Michael (Finn Cole) was among those family members who made themselves because of Tommy. That guy used to admire and respect his elders in every way. He was a little stubborn and angry, but, these are basic genetics among the Shelbys. Inspired by his cousin and driven by rage and love, he did things that broke the family from the inside.

Michael was given the biggest opportunity among the family, running his own office under Shelby Company Limited label, but he overestimated his position and lost all the company stocks in New York because of his poor strategies.

This kid didn’t stop at risking company’s assets, later he married a girl who never respected the family and bsuiness, not even his own mother. Tommy rejected Michael on every turn at the end of the series, which was an opportunity for his wife to turn him against his family, and after Polly’s (Helen McCrory) death, he openly rebelled and made a promise to his dead mother that he will finish Thomas Shelby.

Michael becomes what Tommy always feared, A Shelby enemy from inside the family.

Gina Gray

Credits: BBC One
  • Role: Michaelโ€™s ambitious American wife aligned with powerful political players
  • Threat Level: Manipulative strategist โ€” enemy from within
  • Key Episodes: Season 5 & 6

Gina (Anya Taylor-Joy) was one of the good and spicy additions to Peaky Blinders. How she carried her role is amazing and she portrayed a complete bossy and gangster lady vibe. Although, she made some serious mistakes and one of the biggest among them was underestimating the family and Tommy.

She always believed in one thing and that was “Michael is future, not Tommy Shelby”, and that belief became her husband’s end.

Gina Gray enters the Shelby family with a smile, but, behind that charming face lies a calculated move to seize power and authority. She pushes Michael to challenge Tommyโ€™s leadership, planting seeds of betrayal from the inside. Moreover, she even cheated on her own husband when he was in jail which proves she was not a normal lady. She loves drama and complex lifestyle.

Psychological Enemies | Tommy vs. Himself

Tommy was no common man, he always pushed himself beyond his limits, even his enemies loved to remind him time to time that he’s playing above his limits, and that’s why he created enemies almost everywhere he went, even within himself.

Everyone is a whore, Grace. We just sell different parts of ourselves.

Thomas created and fought his enemies all his life, he never stopped and never got tired. Everytime he faced a situation or enemy, he became stronger, smarter, and even colder inside. By the end of series, he was completely suicidal, not because he was tired, but, he was done. That man had his own strategies and plans, and when he achieved what he really wanted he even decided to end his life with his own will, but, his daughter stopped him of course.

Now what he’s really up to, we’ll get to see this in the last movie on Peaky Blinders, which is a sequel ending to the series, and is till in filming process.
